Every year, the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV) hosts a number of Visiting Scholars interested in spending time at the University of St Andrews.
Visiting Scholars are chosen from a pool of applicants working on terrorism and political violence. Fellows are required to live in the area of St Andrews for the duration of their Fellowship so that they may play an active part in the academic activities of CSTPV (e.g., seminars and conferences).
Visiting Scholars are admitted on a competitive basis for a period of at least one month and up to one academic year at the Center.

Value of Award:
Handa CSTPV does not provide funding for Visiting Scholars; they are expected to have their own source of funding such as sabbatical salary, personal funds, grants from their home governments, or other private organisations.
The Handa CSTPV can neither provide office space at the School of International Relations nor a university email account. Visiting Scholars will be given access to the Library of the University of St Andrews

Applicants to the CSTPV Visiting Scholars Programme must pursue an independent project on political violence in social sciences, including history.
The Programme is open to scholars from anywhere in the world, regardless of nationality. Applicants need to be fluent in English. Preference will be given to those scholars who share research interests with CSTPV staff. Post-doctoral candidates and established scholars are particularly encouraged to apply, but applications from doctoral students will also be considered.
Candidates are asked to indicate the desired length of their stay at CSTPV when applying. Visiting Fellowships will not normally be awarded for more than one year.
English Language Requirements: Applicants need to be fluent in English
There are two deadlines per year: 1 October for fellowships starting in February and 1 March for fellowships starting in September.

- Cover Letter
- CV with a list of publications (10 pages max). Doctoral students need to provide the names of 2–3 academic referees who may be willing to provide a reference on behalf of the applicant.
- Academic career statement (1 page). The purpose of this statement is for you to indicate why you think the visiting scholars programme will benefit you. It should indicate your research and teaching interests and experience, and career plans.
- Research proposal (1 page). The proposal must be clear and well structured, with well-defined and realistic goals that can be achieved within the duration of the fellowship. You may additionally indicate if you think your research will fit with the research interests of members of the Handa CSTPV.
