The Department of Geography and Economic History invites applications  for” PhD Student Position in Social and Economic Geography”  . The department is located at Umeå University and has around 70 employees including about 10 PhD students.

Field: The holder of this position is expected to work within the framework of two ongoing research projects: Mobilising the rural: post-productivism and the new economy (FORMAS) and Grapes of Wrath?Global labour mobility in the wild berry industry affecting rural development in Sweden and Thailand. The theoretical frameworks of the research projects are related to mobility studies and economic geography with a focus on rural areas and local development.

Eligible applicants must fulfil the following prerequisites: 240 ECTS-credits of higher education studies of which at least 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), at least 90 credits must be in social and economic geography or related disciplines, and at least 30 credits must be awarded for successful thesis work in social and economic geography or related disciplines.

Applicants must be proficient in both oral and written communication in English and have proven insight into research in social science. The PhD position also requires oral and written knowledge in Scandinavian languages (preferably Swedish).

If considered eligible the research proposal together with previous academic achievements will primarily be evaluated. Attention will also be given to the applicant’s research skills, specific qualifications, ability to work in a group as well as independently. In the evaluation we will particularly consider if the research proposal is written within the framework of the two above-mentioned research projects.
