The Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES) is a research institute within the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Groningen, located at the Linnaeusborg on the Zernike campus in the north of the city of Groningen.

Job Description:

  • you will design and perform laboratory experiments with marine micro-algal cultures
  • you will explore new techniques to measure carbon uptake and photosynthesis
  • you will participate in one or two field seasons at Rothera Station, Western Antarctic Peninsula; at base, you will carry out field studies to collect samples and perform experiments both with sea-ice samples and seawater samples
  • you will submit a thesis containing a minimum of 3 experimental publications as a first author.


The University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2,266 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,897 gross per month in the fourth year, based on a full-time position (1.0 FTE), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (cao NU), excluding a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual income and a 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance.
